If you feel similar learning something today, this is definitely a volume to pick upwards. A detailed history of the tenuous position that freed blacks held between the Revolution and Emancipation, this book shows all the contradictory forces that acted upon this marginal population. A fascinating--and heartbreaking--read.

Way overrated. blech. Should take been called Free Negro because this overly used, and abused, phrase appears on almost every page. At that place have been slaves all through history, the Romans took whole towns and populations. Non impressed with this one.

A historian of American slavery, Ira Berlin earned his BA in chemistry, and an MA and Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle and Federal City College in Washington, DC before moving to the University of Maryland in 1974, where he was Distinguished University Professor of History. A old president of the Organisation of A historian of American slavery, Ira Berlin earned his BA in chemistry, and an MA and Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circumvolve and Federal City Higher in Washington, DC earlier moving to the University of Maryland in 1974, where he was Distinguished University Professor of History.
